500 Days of Summer
img via (imdb)
I just caught 500 Days of Summer. It was a beautifully acted movie. I really feel in love with Zooey Deschanel. I even appreciated Heath Ledger clone aka Joseph Gordon Levitt. (Am I only one who thinks he looks like Heath Ledger?)
Either way, there was a line that really stuck with me. It was the part when Tom and Summer were laying in bed together and she was telling him a story she had never told anyone and he realizes then that these were not stories she told regularly, but rather these were stories that few trusted people have ever heard. These were stories earned. This got me thinking, about the dynamics behind story telling and why it’s done. In my experience stories have been told to teach, remember, persuade, and connect. For example, fables teach us life lessons, oral tradition helps us remember, brand stories persuade us to join a community, and telling stories helps us connect to friends and family.
After watching 500 days I realized that stories were not meant to just be told. Rather stories were also meant to be earned.
